General Information about Sumiyoshi High School

Sumiyoshi was established in 1922 as a junior high school first, becoming an Osaka Prefectural Sumiyoshi High School under the reform of the school system in 1948. In 1990, the school opened an International Cultural Studies Course, and in 2005, it was reorganized as a specialized high school under the name of "International and Science High School"

3. Curriculum

Science Course

  • Fosters a global mindset and associated skills in students who can contribute to the scientific progress of Japan.
  • Offers a rich science curriculum, including academic writing in English, various research activities, and “Science Camp.”
  • Designated as a Super Science High School by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
  • Established academic cooperation with Osaka University and other universities and conducts regular visits to scientific research institutes.

International Course

  • Fosters a global mindset and associated skills in students who can then work for international cooperation in a variety of fields.
  • Offers a rich language curriculum, including English and a 2nd foreign language (Korean, French, Spanish, Chinese), cross-cultural understanding, English Camp, Recitation Contest, debate tournament, and various international exchange programs.
  • Affiliated with two sister schools in the Republic of Korea and Taiwan.
  • Organizes study tours to America, Australia, Taiwan, the Republic of Korea and other countries.
  • Accepts foreign students from various countries.

As a member of UNESCO School

As a member of the UNESCO School, we are actively engaged in research and promotion of education for international understanding. Through cooperation with other schools in Japan and abroad, we strive to nurture an international mindset in our students and develop global citizens who will play an active role in international society.

School Culture

There are 17 sports clubs and 21 cultural clubs. The school culture is self-directed and autonomous, and students are active in community association activities, such as the Sports Festival and School Festival

Exchange Students

Annually, the school accepts more than 100 students from overseas and conducts exchange activities with them both at our school and online. Long-term overseas exchange students are enrolled in the international course.

Language Training Programs

Language training programs include study tours in Australia, the U.S., the Republic of Korea, and other countries.

Academic camps

The International Course holds an “English Camp” where students learn useful English under the guidance of native English speakers from all over the world through debates, presentations and English games. The Science Course offers a “Science Camp” where students learn the basic techniques of scientific experiments through ecological observation and astronomical observations in nature.
